"Gracie"

The rather unusual horizontal pipe arrangement of this organ was done in order to allow for a single rank of 8’ wooden principal pipes while still making it possible for the player to have clear sightlines to other performers.  The design also allows for the possibility of resting an Italian harpsichord on top which, in effect, creates a claviorganum. The open 8’ pipes create a rich tonal color providing support to any ensemble without overpowering the other instruments or voices.

This instrument is called “Gracie” after the original owner’s cat, whose portrait is painted wandering amongst the pipes.
